  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Change in voice, pain in throat, no exertion.

Hi, Somewhere between 2-4 weeks ago, I lost my singing voice and higher speaking range. During that 3 week period, I was pretty introverted and didn't sing at all so didn't notice. However upon singing again 2 weeks ago, I realised I no longer could, it just comes out as a hoarse raspy hiss. I have sung since preschool and had private lessons and choir and musical theatre all through school, and continued to sing as a hobby now (3 years post grad). So forgetting how to sing would be like forgetting how to walk. I also have a strange feeling in my throat, which only yesterday started to be painful, more so on swallowing. No other symptoms, no cough, fever, runny nose, etc. 2 weeks so far with no change in my voice, even with infections or other illnesses in my life, I've always been able to make SOME sound, but now it's just completely gone. And it's not from overuse, onset was during a very quiet time for me, I was hardly even talking. What could be causing it?
