  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

I suspect I suffer migraine & need to know WHO to turn for treatment

My mother suffered severe migraines for decades.
Middle aged male (currently a researcher) I occassionally suffer severe, debilitating migraines, that often commence while reading with glasses.

I feel that I need to seek specialist help but don't know what type of medical specialist to turn to. Living near Darwin I think my choices are limited though I wish to know who / what you might recommend.

    Hi.

Headaches can vary in type and cause, and it is important to have someone diagnose your headache cause first.

Often, patients tell me they are suffering from migraines, but when we push on their necks, we reproduce their headache. That's called a cervico-genic (from the neck) headache.

Sometimes, Migraines have a component of problem from the neck, while the actual issue of nausea, light sensitivity, visual symptoms etc can come from the migraine itself. The resultant headache is often linked to neck/jaw muscle spasm.

The things I can suggest would be for you to consult a GP to ensure that nothing serious is going on under the covers (although that kind of headache is very rare and unlikely).

A physio or chiropractic assessment is often beneficial to assess any problems linked to your nerves, muscles or skeleton, and if it’s a true migraine, even so medication (speak to your GP) can be of benefit.

I hope that helps somewhat. Unfortunately I don’t know anyone in Darwin, but I'm sure you could ask your friends and family for a referral to a good Chiro or physio.

    Good luck,

    Greg

    Hi,
Further to Greg's post, Dr Greg Goggin is a fantastic chiropractor that is practicing out of Darwin. I would highly recommend him if you are looking to pursue chiropractic care as a potential treatment of your headaches.

    His website is http://ntchiropractic.com.au
