    There are two main types of stroke:

    1. Ischaemic.  Caused by a blockage of a blood vessel by a thrombus or embolus, which starves the supplied part of the brain of oxygen. 
    2. Haemorrhagic.  Caused by a breakdown of a blood vessel wall, resulting in blood accumulating within the brain.
