  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Why is my allergic response getting worse each time I have one?

I have a diagnosed eye allergy (red, itchy, swollen) to dust mites and cat dander which was found a long time ago. It reacts from time to time but is relatively easy to control with eye drops. In April of this year we went to east coast Tasmania & my eyes became very symptomatic & took a long time (over a week) to subside, once we had left the area. The pharmacist said that it was a common condition for tourists due to pollens etc. We recently visited the Adelaide Hills & did some walking & my eyes the next day were so swollen & irritated I could barely open them. Antihistamine did not seem to do anything & I finished up taking some prescribed cortisone (v short term) to reduce swelling. 5 Days after returning home they are still itchy & a little swollen, I have stopped medication. I was never allergic as a child and this condition has only come on as an adult, I am now 58. Last year for the first time I also developed a rash after a course of antibiotics.
