  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Should I tell my boss about my Ulcerative colitis (UC)?

My 15yo recently started part time casual employment at a fast food restaurant.

She has been flaring (UC) but has still managed to go to work.

Is she obliged to tell her employer? She needed to go to the toilet during a 3 hour shift and they were unhappy about it.

There is no legal requirement for your daughter to disclose her condition to an employer, but in light of what has happened she may wish to let her employer know, especially as it would be difficult to hide the problem if she is experiencing a flare and develops worsening symptoms.  To help you and your daughter understand the law in regard to employment and workplace discrimination and for other useful advice and information, a booklet entitled ‘Working with IBD - A Guide for Employees’ is avaiable for free and can be downloaded from the Crohn's & Colitis Australia website www.crohnsandcolitis.com.au
