  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Why do I have a sensitive gag reflex?

I was living in America for 7 months and while over there I started to develop what I call a gag reflex. When I drink things like beer and juice I feel like there is a lot of mucous in my throat and start to gag. I cough up this mucous and spit it out, but it's very embarrassing and so persistent.

Since being back in Australia it has only continued to get worse. When I eat a lot of food it happens, when I wake up of a morning it happens very badly and I have noticed when it gets cold or I am nervous it happens and it starts to become like a positive feedback mechanism. It is as if my throat is closing up, but I have tried inhalers too.

I have been to several doctors, tried 2 different courses of antibiotics and 2 different nasal sprays after getting an x-ray on my sinuses but none of them seem to have worked.

It is impacting my life in a negative way, especially when I am eating at a restaurant etc, and I am starting to go out less and less because of the fear of it happening.
