Why is there an Irritation on my skin where wedding ring used to be?

I have a terrible irritation on my finger where my wedding ring used to go.
I am not using anything different on my skin when washing, can there be a reason for this (I also broke up with my husband 5 years ago), ever since the ring was taken off my finger I have been getting this irritation. ? -

Contact allergy to gold is uncommon. Gold plated rings can release nickel from the base metal alloy. People allergic to nickel can react to silver plated, gold plated, or 9 ct Gold rings.
