Is Propanalol a good option for preventing migraines?

I have suffered with migraines since age 12, am now in early 50s. Currently I am enduring a migraine (or two) just about weekly. I am at my wits end, the pain drives me crazy at night. I take Sumatriptin, with good effect, but worry about taking it too often. My doctor has screened me for any brain pathology (I had a brain scan last month: all normal). He has suggested that I try Propanolol, which I am open to but I am concerned about the side effects of this. Would a ‘chronic pain’ specialist be able to help also?
