Currently massage therapy is not regulated by the same government board that covers health professionals such as doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, dietitians and podiatrists. This board ensures a high standard of qualification is achieved to perform the job, continuing education is done and the neccessary insurances are maintained to protect the patient.

However, there is a large push within the alternative health practitioners such as massage therapists and naturopaths to gain recognition as a regulated health profession. There are a number of hurdles which the pofessions need to overcome before this can be achieved.

In the mean time bodies such as the ATMS( a self governing body) work with government and health insurance companies to ensure their members meet minimum standards to perform their work. As a good start always check whether your therapist is registered to provided a private health fund rebate as this implies they have attained a minimum qualification standard and are recognised by their association as an appropriately qualified and eithical practitioner.
