An art therapist will work with all art forms and media - drawing, painting, claywork, collage, photography, fabric, technological media such as film/video. In art therapy - as in art - materials and media are the tools used to convey inner thoughts, feelings, ideas, concepts. The art becomes the method of communication between the client and the therapist and also between the client and him/herself, often revealing insights which are difficult if not impossible to get at via verbal communication and intellectual understanding.

The key factor is that the art form chosen is one with which the client is comfortable. The other thing that the art therapist is aware of - particularly if the therapist is also an artist - is that each medium works differently and has a different impact and feel for the client.
