  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Are there any self help weight loss groups for type 2 diabetes?

I need help to lose weight and hopefully get my BSL's back to normal. Most weight loss groups such as Weight Watchers etc cost too much money. I would like help to lose weight and don't know where to turn to for help. I need a group close to home, say in richmond Vic or nearby.

Type 2 diabetics should lose fat and not necessarily fat. The diabetic should increase muscle mass because this will lead to greater insulin sensitivity. Since muscle weighs more than fat this change in body composition could result in an increase in weight. Twenty five to 50% of weight loss which comes from diet alone can come from muscle loss. This reduction in muscle can lower the Basal Metabolic Rate and can result in a greater ratio of fat to muscle and this will accentuate the problem.
Without drumming up business contact an Exercise Physiologist who works with Type 2 Diabetics.
