Diabetes can affect the eyes in several ways. High blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels in the retina, causing diabetic retinopathy. Diabetes can also cause fluid to leak into the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision, causing diabetic macular edema. In addition, people with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing cataracts and glaucoma.
