When you donate blood, the amount taken is less than 10% of your blood volume of five litres. People with epilepsy may need a clearance letter from their treating doctor and need to be seizure-free for three years before they can donate. Antiseizure medication does not pose a problem. There are a number of reasons for these measures including that people with epilepsy are prone to fainting or experiencing a drop in blood pressure while giving blood, which is thought to place them at undue risk.
