  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Doctors have not prescribed me anything for my epilepsy. I am worried for my childrens safety. What can I do?

when I was 5 I was diagnosed with Epilepsy, I had cut my foot on a bit of glass and ended up in a coma for 5 days. I was medicated up until I fell pregnant with my first son nearly six years ago, since then the symptoms have gotten worse. I am worried for my childrens safety. Doctors have not prescribed me anything to combat this. I just don't know what to do any more
    Thank You.

It seems that you need to have your symptoms reviewed, particularly if you are worried about your children's safety whilst you are experiencing these symptoms.
Keep a diary of the events and if possible, ask someone to video you whilst you are experiencing the symptoms. When you are discussing the events with your GP, take someone with you who has been with you when you have experienced the symptoms and ask about a referral to a neurologist. It would also be very helpful to have an EEG to see if any epileptic activity is occurring.
It would also be useful to discuss your symptoms with an epilepsy nurse by calling Epilepsy Action Australia on 1300 37 45 37 or filling out the online form available at: http://www.epilepsy.org.au/request-assistance
