What causes loss of taste?

I am a 57-year-old female. I lost my sense of taste several weeks ago and for the first 2 weeks I had a dreadful metallic taste in my mouth. 2 weeeks ago that changed to a salty taste but I still can't taste anything. This is very depressing and I have stopped eating regularly as nothing tastes good. Does this sound like an allergy of some kind? -
