  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Are there medications apart from NSAIDS that work for osteoarthritis?

I have had patella tendon realignment and chondroplasty. I've gone through physiotherapy, exercise regimes, weight loss etc. However, for the last 10 years have had Grade IV chondromalacia with osteoarthritis and am currently taking medication for pain relief. Due to liver lesion I have been advised against taking anti-inflammatories. I can't get a knee replacement until I am over 50 years old (only 45 yrs old at the moment). My specialist has said that there is nothing that they can do now until I am old enough for a knee replacement, but I was hoping that there would be a trial or some way to grow cartilage back into the knee to relieve the symptoms. Would anyone know of any trials or anyone in Australia who do osteochondral autograft or abrasion arthroplasty?
