Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners
Can a psychiatrist help with chronic-fatigue-like symptoms?
I have a history of anxiety/depression. I tried for a decade to find relief, but was never able to find a medication regime that helped.
A year ago, I 'crashed' with symptoms such as hypoglycemia, dizziness, ear ringing, excessive hunger, rapid weight gain, cold intolerance, low body temperatures, sensations of being off-balance when walking etc. These have progressed to me being bedridden with weakness, and unable to tolerate minor exertion (e.g. walking up the stairs).
I saw an endocrinologist who did limited testing -- all that came back was a mildly elevated TSH (3.5). I did try thyroid medication and it helped some symptoms, but exacerbated my fatigue.
I'm not sure where to go from here. My GP believes that what I'm experiencing isn't psychosomatic, but he is at a bit of an impasse. I seem to be excessively sensitive to most supplements/medications etc. and many worsens my symptoms. My energy/money is limited. Would there be any point seeing a neuropsychiatrist?
