  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

My crown fell out. Can it be put back in with glue or something?

There is a hole in my gum now where crown fell out. The crown looks like it has a little tooth (my real tooth) in the middle of it.

Can this crown be used again? As it was expensive and the dentist spent a lot of time shaping it and there was a number of appointments involved.

I am concerned as I have a horrible big Gap now when I smile as its 4th tooth from front on top. (next to eye tooth.)

    Thanks

The short answer to your question is no you cannot glue the crown and part of your tooth back onto the remaining root.

If you do try gluing it back on you can run into trouble with gum infection and possible abcess formation if the internal space in the tooth is exposed and the tooth has not been root canal treated.

Furthermore, there is a real possibility if you use super glue you will attach the crown to the adjacent teeth and the crown will have to be cut off these teeth risking tooth structure removal.

You need to see your dentist again asap.

Your dentist will be able to asses if the crown can be reused. In most cases the crown cannot be reused. Only in rare circumstances can the crown be reattached to the remaining tooth.

If the break has left very little root in the jaw bone then the only option will be to have the root remnant removed and a replacement crown inserted in it's place. Again your dentist will have to make this assesment and decision.
