  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

How do I know if my teeth have shifted after braces?

If my teeth have shifted, will my retainer still fit my mouth? I think I might just be paranoid but my retainer still fits good but i feel like my teeth are shifting.

If you are wearing your retainer as prescribed by your dentist, your teeth are less likely to move (or relapse). Your retainer will not fit well if your teeth have moved since your braces were removed. It might be worth seeing your dentist to confirm that the retainer actually fits well and your teeth have not shifted.

Some retainers can degrade overtime due to heat and pressure and may no longer hold their original shape or be as rigid as new ones. These old retainers may flex and bend when inserted and give an impression of a well fitting retainer.

Consult your dentist to check if you are a candidate for a fixed retainer or if you even need retainers anymore.
