Are there knee supports that would also protect?

In Feb of this year I had surgery to repair a fully ruptured quadricep tendon in my right knee resulting from a fall. I was doing exceptionally well with recovering and returned to activities with lots of caution by May. Two and a half weeks ago walking out to the car I slipped on the ice and fell, breaking the knee cap on the same leg. This resulted in another surgery that involved wires and pins. I have my ortho doctors suggested brace from when I originally fell but don't feel it is really any protection for my knee. Next to bubble wrapping myself are there braces that would assist in protecting my knee for future daily wear?
