EEN involves the use of a liquid diet (specialised formula) for a period of up to 8 weeks, with exclusion of normal diet over this time. EEN is well-established as a very effective treatment in Crohn disease, but does not seem to help in Ulcerative colitis. EEN is used in many paediatric centres across the world, but is used less in adult IBD centres. EEN leads to remission of CD, often within a few weeks. It leads to high rates of healing of the gut wall (mucosal healing), with healing of ulcers and other surface chnages. It also leads to significant nutritional improvementsand very positive chnages in bone health. As well as having a big role as an initial treatment, there is increasing evidence that ongoing nutritional supplements help to change the pattern of disease over time (e.g. less relapses). Along with these good aspects of EEN, this treatment has very few side-effects. But it can be hard for some people to stick with the treatment over time - it needs to be well-supported by family members and the IBD Clinic team.
