    How can I prevent myself from panicking when I cough?

    The coughing fits I have scare me. I panic and feel like I am losing control and cannot breathe.. how do I remain calm in this situation?

    You could look at this from two perspectives. The first is you're still here and the nasty coughing fits haven't finished you off. Therefore, you get yourself into a mind space where you take slow, deep breaths, calm yourself and then try to relieve the mucus or the cough which is distressing you. The second approach is to be more pro-active and perhaps perform some chest physiotherapy or sputum clearance for a set period of time such as 20 minutes at a point in the day prior to a time that you might be having bad spasms of cough.
