  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

What to expect? Mum has secondary ca of lungs and liver primary bowel.

My mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer in late 2008 they said they had caught it early however it did affect the lymph nodes in 2010-2011 found secondary ca in lung left lower lobe removed. And recently found ca on liver. She has had specialized radiation on the spots on her lung and liver. I can really see it is starting the affect her not just mentally but physically. Just wondering if anyone has been through similar situation? I know everyone is different however what is the prognosis / lifespan of someone with this cancer. Im not in denial I know mum won't be around forever but would like to know all the same. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

    Hi there,

Thank You for your enquiry. I am sorry to hear your mum is so unwell. This must be a very difficult time for you.

In answer to your question, I am unable to offer any information on what your mum's life span might be. As I am sure you are already aware, each person's ability to fight cancer is very individual. Unfortunately, the spread of cancer from the bowel to the liver and lung is really very serious so your mum will have a big battle ahead of her.

If you need more information, make an appointment to speak with your mum's treating doctor to see how they think she is going. They will be happy to talk to you.

If you need support, please visit www.bowelcanceraustralia.org where you will be able to contact a Nurse adviser or join the 'Love My Family' Community. By joining the group we may be able to put you in touch with others who are in a similar situation.

    Kind Regards,
