Great question to ask and the answer is Absolutely! There is a great deal of research on exercise and the brain & influencing hormone production and balance. I highly recommend reading John Ratey's book ‘Spark’. He even dedicates a chapter to anxiety. You can read it as a book, or listen to it as an audiobook & exercise at the same time or down load the free podcast from ‘The Brain Science Podcast’ in which he discusses his book & research. He emphasizes the encouraging prospects of using exercise in place of or in measured doses as you would an antidepressant drug.

I agree with Michelle… Aerobic exercise will definitely help with your anxiety! Even after just one session of exercise you will feel brighter, more reactive and have a more positive outlook. This has a lot to do with a hormone called Serotonin, which is released in greater amounts during and after exercise and is resposible for our mood. Remember not to overwhelm yourself with your long term goals, e.g. I want to lose 10 kg and get fit. Take it one day at a time and follow short term goals that you know you can achieve, e.g. This week I want to go for four 30 min brisk walks.
