    Prion disease is a group of diseases that affect humans and animals also as tranmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE). CJD is used to discribe all forms of human TSE except Variant CJD or Mad Cow disease.  CJD is a rare and fatal degenerative brain disease in humans.

    • Sporadic CJD,
    • inherited or genetic CJD including familial CJD, Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker Disease (GSS) and Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI)
    • Acquired CJD - Iatrogenic or medically acquired CJD and Kuru
    In animals TSE's include Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, Chronic Waste disease (CWD) in deer and elk to name just a couple.
