In the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV TR), which is the manual used to diagnose mental disorders in the US and Australia, agoraphobia is defined as a subset of panic disorder, which involves the fear of experiencing panic attacks in public places.

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) publishes a literature review of evidence-based psychological interventions for mental disorders. In the latest edtion of this review, the APS concludes that there is Level 1 evidence (the highest level of evidence) for Cognitive Behvioural Therapy (CBT) in the treatment of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. The review also states that there is Level 2 evidence for CBT-based self-help and psychoeducation, but there is insufficient evidence to indicate that any other interventions are effective.
