Restless legs syndrome (RLS) can have a genetic basis and be passed down through families. This is in around 50% of cases. When RLS symptoms develop early in adult life or childhood there is more likely to be a family history / genetic basis, whereas if RLS symptoms come on later in life other causes are more likely. For more information see Restless Leg Syndrome.
