  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Why am I so tired? Am I depressed?

I am feeling very fatigued; more so than normal, some days I just stay home and sleep or just lay down all day.

I am also tapering from prednisone so not sure if it is that or if I am getting depressed again.

I do have lots of health issues which do affect how I feel but this tiredness/fatigue is getting to me.

A possible explanation for your fatigue is that your thyroid gland is not doing its job properly. The thyroid gland makes a hormone called thyroxine.

I suggest that you talk with your GP, asking him/her to take a blood sample and send it off to a pathology lab for analysis, with a specific request that your blood thyroxine level is measured. If it turns out that your thyroxine levels are abnormally low that will need further investigation (there are various possible reasons) but they can all be managed well.
