PTSD is a fear based psychological injury which can create a pervasive disconnection from emotions. Avoidance of triggers and painful emotion often leads to safety behaviours that isolate and restrict the person's ability to have a full and meaningful life.
First priority in treatment is psychological education and validation of symptoms and then learning skills to manage anxiety.
Later thought challenging and behavioural experimentation to assist with cognitive flexibility.
When the person is better able to manage painful emotion Exposure Therapy is often used.
