Breakfast suggestions for a fussy toddler

    Related Topic
My toddler is a fussy eater and usually has a piece of fruit and either toast or cereal with that. He eats with his hands so the cereal needs to be easily hand fed. I recently gave him Nutri-Grain which i know is high in sugar, but he eats it without a fuss. I'd really like some other suggestions which he could feed himself? Thanks.

Your toddler needs some protein as well as the carbohydrates. Here are some simple suggestions:

    • Why not try a smoothie- you can blend whole milk, some ground rice or almond meal and banana or his favourite fruit.
    • Cheese and carrot sticks.
    • Wholegrain bread with almond/cashew/brazil spread.
If he likes bread then make jaffles with banana and apple inside.
Have you introduced eggs as yet?
Let him experiment with using utensils- he will make a mess- and then he will be able to eat yoghurt with added fresh fruit.
Make sure that you persevere and offer a variety of foods continuously. He will eventually branch out and try new tastes. Letting him help you in the kitchen is often the first step in new taste sensations. Refrain from buying processed cereals- most contain huge quantities of sugar.

    Other cereals that have a better nutrient profile and that he can pick up include;

    Sultana Bran Buds
    Weet-bix Fruity Bites
Muesli with dried fruit, oats, bran and nuts texturally really interesting

    Other suggestions,
Toast with vegemite and chese cut up into little soldiers.
Home Made muffins savoury or sweet with added fibre such as LSA or flaxseed meal.
Baked Beans (he can easily pick them up)
    Boiled egg cut up.
    Apple pancakes

First of all, I would continue to encourage your toddler to feed himself - critical in feeding development. I would also begin to give him some toddler cutlery to begin to play with (it will be messy!) to further encourage development.

Some good breakfast options have already been mentioned however I would also include:

    • Home made ricotta pancakes
    • Wholegrain toast with nut spread
    • Soft boiled eggs with wholegrain "soldier" toast
    • Savoury mini muffins (zucchini, cheese, pumpkin)
    • Mini fruit muffins (using wholemeal flour, nuts, seeds and fruit)
    • Cheese and avocado on toast
    • Breakfast pizza: english muffin topped with reduced salt tomato paste, ham and grated cheese
