Breast Surgeon, General Surgeon
Breast screening either through government initiatives or privately with a GP have ended up detecting a lot of breast cancers at an earlier stage before the presence of symptoms. These are usually identified with mammogram and USS. Some patients can present with symptoms such as Lump in the breast or axilla. Nipple changes: rashes, inversion, discharge (may be clear or bloody) Skin changes such as dimpling, thickened skin, orange peel appearance (peau d'orange) more advanced breast cancer can present as metastatic disease including liver lesions, brain lesions, bony metastatic disease. Unfortunately, there are still patients presenting with locally advanced disease as they can be too embarrassed to seek help or may be falsely reassuring themselves that nothing is wrong. Breast cancer can affect men as well with 1% of breast cancer cases being in men. Typically the presentation is more advanced disease due to sometimes a delay in identifying the malignancy.
