How to prevent potential brain injury while playing sports?

My son is one of the star players on his school rugby team. I am often worried about him getting seriously injured as injuries occur quite frequently. I am most worried about any head injuries that could affect his brain. Is there a high risk of brain injury to those play contact sports? Any way to prevent it? -
