  • Sensitive teeth are often the result of exposed dentine. Dentine is the inner portion of your tooth. The enamel being the outer layer. When the dentine is exposed due to the enamel layer fracturing off or worn away, the tooth becomes sensitive.

Sometimes teeth can become sensitive from trauma to the tooth from a knock or bruxing (tooth to tooth grinding). The pulp tissue which keeps the tooth alive inside the tooth becomes inflammed as a result of the trauma and the tooth can become hypersensitive to hot and cold beverages.

A visit to your dentist immediately is a good idea as dental cavities or a leaking restoration or crack can lead to exposed dentine as well. This needs to be addressed early to avoid the pulp dying requiring the need for root canal treatment.
