    Thanks

    Dr Phu Hoang

    Physiotherapist

I am currently working with MS Australia ACT/NSW/VIC as a Senior Physiotherapist and at Neuroscience Research Australia as a Research Officer under an NHMRC Post-doctoral … View Profile

As of 2011 it was estimated that there were 21,000 people with MS in Australia (based on the data from the on-going Australian Longitudinal study funded by MS Research Australia)
The prevalence of MS ( number of people with MS in 100,000 population) is different in each state and is associated with latitude. Australia MS Survey in 1974 (McCleod et al, 1974) showed that the prevalence was ~ 17 in QLD, ~ 25 in NSW, ~ 35 in VIC and ~ 70 in TAS.

This is the figures in 1974 when Australia poulation was ~ 13,600,000. There was not any recent offical study on the prevalence of MS in Australia to my knowledge. However, the prevalence of MS appeared to have significantly changed with much higher prevalence in the last few decades with the advent of MRI to help with diagnosis, increased understanding of MS, increased awareness of MS among doctors (especially GP). Another factor contributes to the prevalence of MS in Australia are changes in the landscape of immigrants. Will update when I know something new!
