Study finds young Aussie women detox to diet

A recent newspoll survey of women aged 18-24 found that 60% tried to lose weight last year.  Of those, one in four used a fad diet - with the Liver Cleansing Diet and Lemon Detox Diet being two of the most popular.

The Dietitian's Association of Australia (DAA) will soon launch it's annual Australia's Healthy Weight Week campaign (22-29th January), which this year urges 18-25 year old women to commit to looking and feeling their best.  DAA have set up a pledge campaign to encourage young women to kick start healthy eating and exercise habits - in a healthy way! See www.healthyweightweek.com.au

We're urging young women to forget magic powders and starvation plans, and be aware of any diet which promises quick or dramatic results.  Detox diets are touted as a way to remove toxins from the body.  They usually include a period of fasting, followed by a strict diet.  Many cut out certain foods, some promote using expensive herbs and supplements. But, there's little evidence that detox diets actually remove any toxins.  That's the job of the liver and kidneys, and they do this everyday!  Detox diets often also have side effects such as dehydration, bad breath, constipation and nausea.  Some women end up blaming themselves for not being ablt to stick to the diet, but the truth is, it's the diet that's failing them.  It's not realistic to sinmply eat nothing but raw foods or a sip of a lemon drink for any length of time.

The best ‘detox’ is drinking plenty of water, and eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, wholegrain breads and cereals, lean meat, chicken or fish, lower-fat dairy foods and healthy fats.  What you do for a few days or a week, won't make up for what you do for the other 365 days of the year.

To celebrate Australia's Healthy Weight Week, we're running a webinar on “Mindful Eating”.  For more details see http://health-kick.com.au/education/webinars
