    Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose minerals, such as calcium, more quickly than the body can replace them, leading to a loss of bone thickness (bone mass or density). As a result, bones become thinner and less dense, so that even a minor bump or accident can cause serious fractures.

    Osteoporosis can be prevented and managed by looking at certain elements that put you at a higher risk for the condition.
    These include:
    • being over the age of 65
    • having a diet low in Calcium
    • minimal sun expsure (Vitamin D exposure)
    • leading an inactive lifestyle
    • excessive alcohol consumption
    • being a smoker
    • post menopausal women
    By looking at the risk factors that can be changed: diet, exercise, alcohol consumption and smoking you can decrease your chance of low bone density and serious fractures.
