Surgery offers the best chance of long-term survival when the cancer has not spread beyond the pancreas and surrounding structures. The feasibility of surgery depends on the location and extent of the tumour, its relationship to major blood vessels, and the patient's fitness. Approximately 15–20% of patients are candidates for surgical resection at diagnosis.
