General Surgeon, Upper GI Surgeon (Abdominal)
The most common operation is a pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure), performed for tumours in the head of the pancreas. This involves removal of the head of the pancreas, the duodenum, part of the bile duct, and the gallbladder, with reconstruction to restore digestive continuity. Tumours in the body or tail of the pancreas are treated with a distal pancreatectomy. These are complex operations performed by specialist pancreatic surgeons.
