Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners
Can I get my orthodontic records?
I completed my Invisalign treatment in mid-2020 and have been wearing a lab-made removable top and bottom retainer every night since. About 5 nights ago, I lost my retainer set.
I wish to retain my teeth in their ideal position - which I've put lots of hard-earned money towards achieving. My orthodontist advises that as I'm no longer an active patient they are unavailable to see me for two months... so to save my teeth from moving out of position, I've gotten new moulds taken for my retainers made by my dentist instead, who accommodated me on short notice.
In discussions with my orthodontist, they refused to disclose who made my previous retainers and whether they have any impressions of my teeth. I understand that it's ultimately up to a dental professional to advise whether I need new impressions or can get my previous retainer remade, but I find the refusal to disclose my own dental records a little strange. Is this information that I am entitled to? If so, how can I get it?
