    Type 2 diabetes and blindness

Just after my 50th birthday I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes by my family doctor and placed on medication. I get my eyes checked by an optometrist every year. At my last eye test my optometrist told me I had some very small changes on my retina, probably related to my diabetes - “small leakages of blood”. My vision is still pretty good and I don’t feel any pain but I’m a little worried. Am I going to go blind? The optometrist has referred me to an ophthalmologist (eye specialist). I try eat well and walk when I can so how can my diabetes be causing this?
