  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

I only take active pills continuously, can I get pregnant?

I used to have really long periods lasting for 3 weeks and excruciating period cramps. Last year, I discovered that I had endometriosis and small ovarian cysts. To overcome the painful symptoms, my doctor had instructed me to only take active birth control pills continuously and skip the inactive ones, ie. after I finish 3 weeks of active pills, I go straight into the next pack's active pills. Since then, I no longer have my period except the occasional breakthrough bleeding in which my doctor said to stop the pills and let it bleed for about a week before resuming taking my active pills again. I also use my birth control pills as contraception as boyfriend and I are sexually actively. We don't use condoms as we are monogamous and have both been tested negative for STIs. I normally take the pills at the same time daily and if I forget, I usually take it within a few hours. What are my chances of getting pregnant?
