I am aged 65 and have had long-term atrial fibrillation (25 years) due to mitral valve incompetence following bacterial endocarditis. The valve has been repaired with a very minor leak (at age 41).
I am currently medicated with warfarin and digoxin.
I intend to hike in the Alps with some of the high points at around 2,800 metres.
I am aware of altitude sickness. What are your thoughts on the additional risks of the atrial fibrillation and any precautions or steps one should take to minimise the effects of the altitude? Thanks.
