  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

I started taking medications for depression & anxiety. Why do if feel bad?

I have taken medications for 10 days now. I am terribly nauseous, have diarrhea and extremely anxious. How long will that last and when do you think I will start to feel relief from my depression and anxiety? I feel terrible and scared because I feel worse anxiety wise than before. I guess I just need to know that there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi unfortunately one of the side effects of some antidepressants can make you feel depressed even so they are used for depression.  They can take about 2 weeks to notice changes and up to six or 8 weeks before you notice the full effect.  Are you also seeing a therapist? Some time just taking the medication is not enough and you may need talk or cognitive behavioural therapy as well also there is no harm going back to your Dr to discuss how you're feeling.

I do hope you start feeling better soon do take care

I agree with what Anonymous wrote.

In my experience a combination of an anti-depressant and talk therapy has been more effective than either in isolation.

Asking your doctor to refer you to a clinical psychologist who uses approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and/or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with his/her clients is a good plan.
