  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Why can't my 7 year old son put on weight?

Poor weight gain from birth (3.3kg, 40 wks). Now at 7.5 yr is 18.5kg. Height 10% and HC <3% since 6 months old. Colic and severe reflux as a baby. IgE testing as a baby and no reaction, however after excluding and reintroducing foods at 6 years we have found an intolerance to dairy, soy, wheat and possibly egg. Genetic testing for HC, normal, no known cause. Normal IQ, high functioning ASD which dramatically improved with omission of wheat and dairy. Mild anaemia self corrected once dairy excluded from diet. We make every effort to meet dietary requirements, supplementing as advised by dietitian with no success. 2 younger sisters. One has mild wheat and dairy intolerance normal weight, height, HC. Baby sister normal HC, 10% length, 5% weight and decreasing. On Neocate for suspected dairy allergy. No family history of poor weight gain and each male is around 6 ft tall. There is more to this than an intolerance and now baby looks like she is heading down the same path.
