How to eat and loose a few kilos realistically?

I have looked up these, but honestly cannot find anything. I'm sorry but I don't have black beans or crazy ingredients in my pantry, plus a lot of these ingredient are so very expensive. I wish that there was a sight that was like a survey to ask what I like and don't like and create a diet plan like that, and that is also cost effective. I can't have ricotta cheese at work. I work retail, so it's unrealistic to take/make this stuff for lunch at work and I'm yet to find recipes to be realistic in every day life or what is better to buy for lunch, should I stick to old school sandwiches or go sushi (lets face it, sushi is pretty much the only thing available), or go to the food court for a roast? I hate salmon and am allergic to orange vegetables but raw carrot is fine. I need some basic guidelines and advice, I go to the USA in 4 weeks and would like to shed a few kilo's before then, I think I have elves coming into my closet at night sewing my clothes tighter!
