Frequent inability to sleep - any advice?

I have always taken a long time to get to sleep, however some nights its nigh on impossible to fall asleep, or once I do, I wake up a few hours later and then can't back to sleep. I also have a problem where, every couple of weeks, I will have 2-3+ days that I cannot sleep and usually end up with only 2-4 hours per night. The last time this happened I ended up only sleeping 11hrs in 4 days and was almost delirious from lack of sleep, but STILL couldn't fall asleep – it was only on day 5 after travelling overnight (and therefore staying up for the full night) that I finally slept again. During this time I tried exercising, relaxation, listening to audiobooks, listening to sleep sounds/meditations/music, etc etc etc (just about everything and anything!). I'm really concerned about the next time this strikes, as lack of sleep has horrible effects on my health (I am asking about this in a separate question, so will not go into detail here). What can I do to improve my general sleep?
