First Time Sex - why does it feel so painful?

My boyfriend and myself have recently just started trying to have sex (after months of intercourse and foreplay). We prepared ourselves and always used a lubricant, but I've found that once the tip of his penis is inserted, it becomes extremely painful, and I find that my vagina feels 'too tight' and not stretched enough for him to fit. It almost feels as though he is 'hitting a wall' once we get past the tip of his penis being inserted, and it becomes too painful to continue. My boyfriend also expresses that sometimes, it can be painful for him too. I'm scared that something is wrong, and I'm not sure if I should be seeing a doctor about this? The two of us were both virgins, and have only tried to have sex twice. Is it possible that it's hurting because we haven't done a whole lot of fingering? (sorry to be graphic!). We've only really conquered 1-2 fingers? I just don't understand how fingers can be easily inserted into my vagina, but a penis hurts too much? Thanks!
