  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

How can I overcome NRT addiction?

I gave up smoking years ago but now I can't go without nicotine lozengers. I get angry and sweaty and have been importing them as they are not currently available in Australia. What is the best way to break this habit? I have had alcohol addiction and self harm issues in the past. I am going well apart from the NRT adiction at the moment. I am worried about coping without NRT.

Like you, I gave up smoking some years ago - I found that nicotine patches (not lozenges) were helpful. I tapered off patches slowly, with advice from my GP.

I suggest that you talk with your GP about this. S/he should be able to refer you to a mental health professional who has experience of working with clients who have physical addiction issues.

    All the best.
