  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Why aren't almond meal and brazil nuts allowed on FODMAP?

    Hello,

I have purchased the Monash FODMAP which is extremely helpful.

However, I notice almond meal and brazil nuts are not mentioned at all.

Do you have a view on whether these foods would be problematic for those with IBS on a low FODMAP diet or are you intending to test them some time in the future? Thank you.

    Hi Narelle,

I discussed almond meal with a FODMAP client in previous weeks.

It takes quite a large number of almonds to make a moderate portion of almond meal This makes it very difficult to stay below the Low FODMAP recommendation of <10 nuts per sitting. It may be best to avoid food products containing almond meal during the elimination phase of the FODMAP diet and you could then use to trial fructans and galactans later on.

As for brazil nuts, I am not 100% certain for their exclucision. It may be related to a limited ability to list all food products.

I hope this has been helpful and if you would like some more information feel free to contact me.
