  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Should I be concerned about my toddlers diet?

My 2.5yr old daughter has been a terrible eater since I started solids. She has always been underweight…sitting in the 3rd percentile or falling below it .
Main meals are the main problem. I have tried pasta, curries, rice dishes etc and she refuses to eat them or may have 1,2 bites than just cries . she like some fruit and yoghurt. She goes to daycare and they say she eats well there (which I doubt as shes a terrible eater at home ). Her weight has been 11.3-11.6kg for past 6 months.
I'm really fed up and need help!

    Regards,

    Sam

    Hi Sam,
What a stressful situation. It's normal for toddlers to be fussy but it is a concern if her weight is not increasing as it should.

The first thing you should do (if you haven't already) is to take your daughter to the doctor to make sure there's nothing medically wrong.

The second is to get a full nutritional assessment. There are a few queries I have as a dietitian, including how much milk she's getting, how the mealtimes are spaced, snacking and her whole weight.

After that, the next step is to look at introducing new foods one at a time, and enriching her foods so that what she does eat is full of nutrients.

Feel free to get in contact with me to ask any more questions or book an appointment.
